Considering a Commission?
Nicholas has been creating commissioned pieces for over 25 years. A commission is a great way way to customize a piece of art for your collection, especially when you have a specific spot or creative idea in mind
In 2020 Nicholas was selected through a competative process to design the donor wall for the new Crested Butte Center for the Arts. The 40’x9’ wood and copper mosaic is the largest commission Nicholas has completed. Other examples of private commissions can be found on walls throughout the southwest United States.
How does a commission work?
A commission typically begins with a conversation to discuss the project and space you have in mind. Nicholas then creates a preliminary study in Gouache (an opaque watercolor) for approval from the client. This sketch can then be digitally rendered in your space to confirm the final size of the commission. Once approval of the sketch is given and a 50% deposit has been received, commissions can take anywhere from one month to one year to complete depending on the size. Final payment is due upon approval of completed painting.

“For years, our ranching family has wanted a painting that reflects this heritage. Spending each summer in Crested Butte and especially at Oh Be Joyful Gallery, we spoke to Nicholas about our quest and he mentioned a commissioned work. After describing our vision, he painted a quick image of the painting, and it blew us away. A year later Nicholas hung the beautiful painting in our home. The subject and quality of the work exceeded our dreams. We consider this, our first commissioned work, perfect.”
